Check out my Goodreads review of Middlesex. I know, I know, I’m so late to the game but as the Miss Mary Contrary that I am, I generally don’t read trendy books at the height of their trendiness–I tend to meander through eras and styles. It’s been on my list for forever, but I finally borrowed it from my friend after I discovered that she had one of my books on her shelf (Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld), and not wanting to burden myself with one that I’ve already read, I grabbed this one so that I’d at least have something to read on the subway. This was the first book this year that made me miss a stop.

This an unpopular opinion but I HATED middlesex. I think it has two beautiful stories that deserved a book each and the use of (like, totally) parenthetical was overdone and pretentious. IMO, of course. X

Comment by LK September 13, 2007 @ 11:28 pmThat is an unpopular opinion, haha… I feel like the “meta” self-referential prose and parenthetical statements are just such a part of contemporary fiction now, that I’ve become pretty immune to it. Thanks for your take, though!
