The R.I.P. Challenge sponsored by Stainless Steel Droppings (that I read about on The Literate Kitten) seems like a cool one to do, and a good way to fit in some things that I’ve been meaning to read. Although I’m never very good at these challenges and tend to get sidetracked easily, here are my choices for Peril One:
Classic Horror Stories: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
Young Adult: the last Harry Potter, whatever it’s called, by JK Rowling
Horror Stories: Fragile Things by Neil Gaiman
Gothic Fiction: Turn of the Screw by Henry James

Good choices…but I have to admit, the appeal and appreciation for the works of Henry James never cease to amaze me. I find his writing very dull–even M.R. James is more readable (and I’m no James fan). Thanks for drawing the “challenge” to my attention–looks like fun…
Comment by Cliff Burns September 10, 2007 @ 2:51 pmYay. If you have to choose a challenge, this is the one, in my opinion.
I like your choices. Go for Henry James, definitely. I will be interested in your take on Frankenstein. I whipped through it so quickly that I didn’t have the guts to put it on my “finished” list. But I found it so unlike all the cinematic myth built around Frankenstein that I wondered where Hollywood even cooked up the Boris Karloff version!
Comment by LK September 11, 2007 @ 8:55 pmCliff, I agree re: James. Daisy Miller killed it for me, but I already started Turn of the Screw and became engrossed really quickly. LitKit, I’m embarrassed that I haven’t read Frankenstein yet. I plan to check out Shelley Jackson’s hypertext take on it afterwards–will let you know.
Comment by snackywombat September 13, 2007 @ 3:32 am[...] So here’s my review of Turn of the Screw, which was the first stop along the scary road of my RIP Autumn Reading Challenge. Once I’m done with that (October 31), I think I’ll move along to what everyone is [...]
